section 8 application online

Apply for Section 8 Online

How can I apply online and get on Section 8?

The only way to apply for Section 8 is through your local housing authority. A Section 8 application is always free.

What are the requirements for Section 8 Housing?

The subsidy standards used by the Housing Authority in determining the number of bedrooms each family is authorized is as follows. A bedroom is authorized for the head of household and spouse or partner. If there is no spouse or partner, the head of household is authorized one bedroom alone. For each two additional persons another bedroom is authorized. In the case of a family with an odd number of family members in addition to the head and spouse, an additional bedroom is authorized. This policy is in keeping with Federal Regulations that require the Housing Authority to designate standards that provide for the smallest number of bedrooms needed to house a family without overcrowding. This statute applies weather the applicant is going to apply for Section 8 online or in person at the housing authority. Please see the Code of Federal Regulations 24 Part 982.402 (1). Families that are moving or who have had a recent change in the family composition may have a change in the number of bedrooms that they are authorized on the Voucher. All families drawn from the waiting list will be issued Vouchers based on these subsidy standards. Families with Vouchers will be reviewed at annual re-examination time and the current voucher payment standards must be applied.

Here is the procedure for the way names are drawn from the waiting list for Section 8 assistance. When your name is reached on the waiting list, you must provide proof that you meet the preferences above. If those items are provided, you will need to complete an eligibility questionnaire and provide additional documentation. If all eligibility requirements are met, you will need to attend a group meeting to receive your voucher after completing a Section 8 application online and receive additional information on how the program works. If you do not meet any of the preferences explained above your registration will be returned.

Families on the Housing Choice Voucher Program must meet continued eligibility for housing under HUD/SAHA guidelines to include appropriate unit size, and monthly rent based on family income, and household composition.

The housing authority utilizes the Enterprise Income Verification (EIV) system to validate income information reported by participants in both the public housing and Section 8 housing programs. The EIV system electronically utilizes independent sources, such as those maintained by the Social Security Administration, State Wage Information Collection Agencies, and private vendors, to confirm income figures provided at application and re-certification. Knowingly underreporting income may result in the assessment of back charges, termination of assistance, and/or prosecution through the District Attorney’s office.

Changes of Income and/or Family Composition - All changes in family income must be reported to housing authority within 10 business days of the occurrence. The family must inform SAHA of the birth, adoption or court-awarded custody of a child within 15 days. The family must request housing authority approval to add any other family member as an occupant of the unit. Failure to report changes can result in retroactive rent increases or lease terminations. The process to complete a low income housing application can be arduous, but beneficial in the end.
